Main categories of ontology and the philosophy of information society

Information society raises a new class of philosophical issues, the solution of which requires clarification and even further development of traditional ontological concepts. This reminds the situation during the crisis in physics (late 19th – early 20th centuries), when the development of a new fundamental physical theory required a profound elaboration of the concept of matter and a number of epistemological ideas regarding the cognition of reality. Currently, clarifying the philosophical concepts of the material and the ideal is becoming a necessary prerequisite for understanding such fundamental notions of modern science as “information” and “virtual reality.” To explain the characteristics of information society, philosophical ontology develops a framework of auxiliary notions that clarify the content of traditional ontological categories — matter, consciousness, development, etc. These auxiliary ontological categories include, first of all, the notions of virtual reality, abstract material structures, computer programs and files, quasi-ideality and quasi-subjectivity, intersubjectivity, and social complementarity. The philosophical essence of the concept of virtual reality is condensed in the notion of virtual computer reality. Artificially created in the 20th century, it is physically formed by the content of files and programs running on computer devices and constituting the essential foundation of all modern information processes, technologies, audio and video products, etc. Abstract material structures are microscopic configurations formed by magnetic dipoles on a material medium, capable of recording information and human knowledge on a physical substrate. Quasi-ideality and quasi-subjectivity are specific properties of virtual reality, superficially similar to the ideality and subjectivity inherent in ideal phenomena. The concept of the intersubjective (quasi-material), conversely, expresses the properties of social consciousness formed by information technology, which make it similar to material phenomena, objective reality. The development of the interactions between the material and the ideal in the information age leads to a further complication of both the material and spiritual life of society, resulting in new and unusual phenomena in the practical activities of modern civilization.References
