ПРИЗРАЧНАЯ КАРЕТА: ОТ ФОЛЬКЛОРА К ЛИТЕРАТУРЕ

Аннотация

Образ призрачной кареты широко распространен в британском фольклоре, он устойчиво ассоциируется со смертью и дурными предзнаменованиями, и неудивительно, что он заинтересовал авторов готических новелл (ghost stories). Некоторые тексты такого рода близки к фольклорной традиции, но чаще встречаются оригинальные авторские версии, в которых мифология призрачной кареты взаимодействует с другими темами (жених-призрак) и утрачивает некоторые элементы, важные для народного сознания, но необязательные в художественном тексте (гибель нарушившего запрет, действенность церковных таинств против призраков и нечисти). В соответствии с логикой жанра сама карета превращается в замкнутое подпространство, в котором перестают действовать законы рационального мира, в своеобразную капсулу времени, где события разворачиваются по законам страшной сказки или легенды. Возможны варианты, когда карета доставляет в мир живых призрак или демоническое создание. В более поздних новеллах карету иногда заменяет машина, полностью наследующая ее функции; это не связано со страхом перед новым средством передвижения, старинный мотив просто вписывается в новые реалии. Сохраняются традиционные темы отмщения, наказания, встречи живых и мертвых, но они иногда обретают новый символический смысл и помогают раскрыть темы времени и памяти. Анализ трансформации образа призрачной кареты в готической новеллистике может быть полезен для понимания логики развития жанра (преобразование фольклорных мотивов и нарративных принципов, представления о смерти и времени и т. д.).
