The Birth of Emil Cioran's Authorial “I”

Abstract

This article examines the genesis of the authorial “I” in works of Emil Cioran as a radical literary-philosophical project grounded in the systematic destabilization of subjectivity through writing. At the center of the analysis lies the fragmentary form, understood not as a stylistic preference but as a decisive aesthetic and theoretical instrument by which Cioran undermines the coherence of the self, transforming it from the source of discourse into a problematic site of perpetual self-negation. The study gives particular attention to the linguistic rupture marked by Cioran’s transition from Romanian to French, interpreted not as a mere change of language but as an existential and poetics-defining metamorphosis that reconfigures subjectivity, authorship, and literary form itself. The article introduces and elaborates the concept of the frontier text, designating Cioran’s transitional works that occupy a zone of tension between lyrical expansion and stylistic constriction, collective identity and apatride writing, philosophical discourse and literary self-staging. It is argued that a fragment in Cioran’s works performs a critical and even aggressive function: rather than expressing subjectivity, it dismembers it, exposing its contradictions and preventing the stabilization of a unified authorial voice. In this perspective, the “death of the author” is reconsidered not in a poststructuralist sense but as an immanent operation of writing – an act enacted and experienced by the author within the texture of the text itself. A significant part of the study is devoted to the intimate and physiological dimensions of Cioran’s writing (illness, insomnia, walking, night), which are analyzed as spaces of “negative knowledge” and as engines of fragmentary thought. Paradoxically, it is precisely the emergence of intimate and autobiographical elements – introduced against the backdrop of a declared rejection of subjectivity – that further erodes authorial identity, converting the “I” into a literary mask and a scene of internal disjunction. Ultimately, the article proposes reading Cioran’s oeuvre as a distinctive contribution to twentieth-century literary theory: a limit-experience of writing in which style becomes a mode of thinking, and the authorial self exists only as a process of endless decomposition, constituted solely through the gesture of its own exposure and negation.
