Триумф глупости и благочестия: трансформация образа матери Мерлина от дочери короля к деревенской дурочке

Аннотация

В статье анализируются два основных образа сюжета о рождении Мерлина: образ самого артуровского пророка и образ его матери. Цель исследования – выявить взаимовлияние данных образов и их трансформацию по мере развития теологических, политических, социальных, демографических, медицинских и литературных контекстов и изменения культурно-нравственных ценностей. В качестве таковых рассматриваются демонизация сверхъестественного, монополизация мотива непорочного зачатия, усиление бинарности мышления в позднее Средневековье и амбивалентность раннего Нового времени, теологические дебаты о способности дьявола к оплодотворению, замещение аристотелевской односемянной теории зачатия галеновской двусемянной, изменения в законах, касающихся внебрачных детей, высокие показатели количества бастардов в английских приходах, социальная ответственность незамужних матерей в раннее Новое время, мизогиния, охота на ведьм и усиление критики придворных нравов. В статье утверждается, что синтетичность образа Мерлина и непримиримость его демонического происхождения с ведущей ролью в легенде о короле Артуре привела к непрерывным попыткам оправдать сверхъестественное зачатие будущего пророка, к трансформации социального статуса матери Мерлина, меры ее вовлеченности в процесс зачатия, демонологизации ее образа и возникновению ассоциаций с ведьмой и блудницей. Из многочисленных текстов, использующих сюжет о рождении Мерлина, в качестве материала исследования избраны те, в которых осуществлены значимые изменения трактовки образов и сюжета в целом, а именно: хроники Ненния и Гальфрида Монмутского, отрывок «Брута» Лайамона, «Роман в прозе» Робера де Борона, поэма о Пирсе Гавестоне и «Поли-Альбион» Майкла Дрейтона, «Жизнь Мерлина» Томаса Хейвуда. Основное внимание уделяется пьесе Уильяма Роули «Рождение Мерлина, или Ребенок нашел Отца».
