Abstract

The article examines the intertext in the poem “The Cantos”, associated with such sources as the works of Dante Alighieri, one of the most authoritative predecessors for E. Pound. Canto XCIII, part of the “Rock Drill” cycle (1953-1956), is analyzed. In the text of this Canto are interpreted quotes and allusions from “Convivio” by Dante. The analysis reveals ideas about the structure of the universe and its driving forces, reflected in the text of Canto XCIII, borrowed by Pound from Dante. The idea of “international” intertext, which is significant for the work of the American author, is emphasized in the fragments of “Convivio” quoted in the text of Canto XCIII. Also, similar motives can be traced in Dante and Pound in understanding the specifics of realizing the contemplation of truth as the highest goal of a reasonable person. The conclusion is drawn about the significance of this pretext for understanding Canto XCIII.
