THE STROGANOVS IN MEMORY POLITICS AND CULTURAL MEMORY OF THE ‘STROGANOV’ REGION RESIDENTS
Keywords:
Stroganovs, "Stroganov" region, memory politics, cultural memory, regional identityAbstract
The main ideas about the genus of the Stroganovs in the memory of residents of the historical "Stroganov" region are considered. The theoretical framework for the analysis is the concept of symbolic politics, and the sources used are the materials of expert interviews and the survey "The Legacy of the Stroganov family in the modern world". Since the 1990s, the Stroganovs have been included in the process of establishing a new regional policy of memory: exhibitions and scientific conferences dedicated to the Stroganovs were held, public organizations were created under their name, and mass cultural events were organized. For three decades, the Stroganovs held a leading position in the regional memory politics, but this did not lead to practical results in forming the Stroganov name as a brand. At the same time, in the cultural memory of the residents of the "Stroganov" region, the majority of the Stroganovs have a bright positive image, which is associated with the future development of the region. The method of expert interviews with people working in the field of historical heritage preservation and the authors’ survey among residents of the Stroganov region revealed a certain difference in perceiving the Stroganovs: the older generation, in contrast to the youth, is generally more informed and interested in studying the history of the genus. They also more often connect prospects for the development of their territory with the Stroganovs. At the same time, those interested in promoting the Stroganov name act separately, and there is no single public centre dealing with the Stroganov heritage. The main role in forming the Stroganov identity today is played by the government, which, in turn, has not developed a unified policy on the issue.References
