Political Effects of Ethnic Territorial Autonomies

For a long time ethnic territorial autonomies (ETA) have been at the center of de-bates on how to secure the balance of interests between spatially concentrated eth-nic groups and central government. In this paper we consider the results of the re-cent studies of political effects of ETA and compare different research strategies, their scope and limits. We point out that large-N quantitative studies tend to em-phasize the pacifying effects of ETA, while small-N comparisons and case studies lead to more controversial results. In general, the present corpus of studies reveals the necessity for contextualizing the mechanisms of autonomization. We also claim that researchers of ethnic conflicts can benefit from more precise empirical data about strategies and policies of balancing inter-ethnic relations in modern politiesDOI: 10.17072/2218-1067-2016-1-127-152References
