An artist between the power and resistance: problems of identification

The article analyzes the problem of the correlation between official and unofficial culture. The distinction is not obvious and becomes a part of an artist’s tactics in a dialogue with the authorities, acting as his reaction to the existing political situation. The author refers to the Soviet cultural discourse as a case for the study. An artist either makes a choice in favor of cooperation with the authorities, or takes the side of the opposition to the existing regime. Rather tough “rules of the game” that existed in the USSR in every possible way lowered the importance of unofficial culture, making the accent on the official culture so as to demonstrate the achieve-ments of building socialism.
