HOW DO WE MEASURE PATRIOTISM? ON THE CONCEPTUALIZATION OF THE CON-CEPT
Keywords:
symbolical policy, patriotism, civic identity, love for the motherland, civic dutyAbstract
Discussing the issue of patriotism is one of the most active discourses in the public field of modern Russia today. At the same time, the lack of a conventional understanding of what the concept of patriotism means often leads to replacing its scientific interpretation with ideological meanings. The article analyzes the main approaches to the definition of the concept in modern political science. The first approach, referred to by the authors of the paper as ‘substantial’, brings together and even identifies the meaning of patriotism with the content of the notion ‘love for the country’, thereby reducing it to a non-political attitude. The second approach, referred to as ‘critical’ in the article, considers patriotism as a means of political manipulation. The article attempts to conceptualize the notion, which makes it possible to overcome extremes in approaches and to use the concept as a scientific category, as well as a tool of political research. In the proposed interpretation, patriotism is seen as a political attitude, although it includes love for the motherland as an emotional component. This political attitude is the self-identification of people as citizens of a state, whose institutions, in their view, are in the public interest. Thus, the political functions of patriotism are associated with legitimation (or delegitimation) of power and the formation of identity. Conceptualized in this way, the understanding of patriotism can serve as a methodological basis for interpreting the results of opinion polls. In the final part of the article, the authors provide results of interpreting such a poll conducted in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug (District)-Ugra.DOI: 10.17072/2218-1067-2019-4-31-43References
