BREXIT: IMPACT ON THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND

There are numerous complicated periods in the history of Ireland-UK relations, from the war of independence and religious issues to the actions of paramilitary organization of IRA and border issues. Despite all the protracted conflicts, the two states managed to come to a consensus. The Good Friday Agreement and accession to the European Union settled Anglo-Irish political and economic relations. However, the decision of the United Kingdom to leave the European Union could jeopardize the established relations between the two states. The Republic of Ireland is considered a country with an export-oriented economy. Around 15 per cent of its exported goods and services are destined to the United Kingdom, and in certain spheres the UK is a major market for Ireland (for instance, approximately 40 per cent of all products of the agri-food industry is exported there). Due to the fact that Ireland has a high trade intensity with the United Kingdom, it is particularly susceptible to the impact of Brexit. The author starts with studying the historical and political background and the evolution of Anglo-Irish relations over the past century with the aim to reveal the impact Brexit might bring to the Republic of Ireland. Further on, the paper continues with research into the deep economic integration between Ireland and the UK, which explains the principal reasons for Ireland’s high exposure to Brexit. Finally, the author indicates the key sectors of the Irish economy where the impact of Brexit would be especially large and explains what particular factors cause that vulnerability.DOI: 10.17072/2218-1067-2019-2-87-92References
