Representation of political parties in the election commissions of the Subjects of the Russian Federation (as of the beginning of 2015)

Based on the official data, the article analyzes members of the functioning election commissions in 85 subjects of the Russian Federation in terms of representativeness of various political parties in these commissions. Formal and informal representation of parties is distinguished; reasons for the major role of the “ruling party” and insignificant role of parliamentary and non-parliamentary opposition parties in the regional election commissions are discussed. The article also elicits the resources and mechanisms that help the regional authorities maintain the advantage of “United Russia” (Yedinaya Rossiya) in the commissions.
