Individualism in Writings of Social Capital Theory Followers: Ideological Aspect
Keywords:
social capital theory, individualization, capitalism, welfare stateAbstract
The article considers some scepticism about social capital theory as a set of politicized concepts. It is shown that some ethical concepts concerning individualism and the decline of unity are developed in writings of social capital theory followers. The author considers criticism of these concepts. Critics point out the direct connection between social capital theory and neo-liberal ideology (the idea of the individual as an investor in social capital). They believe that neo-liberal order breaks social links and promotes fragmentation. They also show that the highest rates of “social capital” (trust) are observed in the countries where the state contributes to equitable distribution of wealth (“Swedish socialism”). However, according to the author these findings do not provide a complete picture of the crisis of individualism. It should be remembered that individualism and alienation are also the result of material well-being growth. In other words, the welfare state can contribute to erosion of other important forms of “social capital”, besides trust. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17072/2218-1067-2015-3-20-32References
