Turkey’s position towards the Kurdish issue in Syria

Abstract

With the Syrian crisis escalation, the Kurdish minority in Syria has become stronger and gained military and political clout, which caused great Turkish displeasure. Ankara regards the rising Kurdish autonomy in the north of Syria as a direct threat to its national security for several reasons. First, there is a numerous Kurdish minority in Turkey, which can use the achievements of its Syrian brethren to their advantage. Second, the Kurdish autonomy moves are headed by the De-mocratic Union Party, which is considered to be a wing of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, conducting the war against the Turkish government and included in the list of terrorist organizations in Turkey. Third, the Turkish state philosophy is based on ideas of the strong national state where every citizen is considered to be a Turk. Any autonomy will make Turkey significantly change its national idea. That is why Ankara will prevent any Kurdish attempts to organize autonomy in SyriaDOI: 10.17072/2218-1067-2016-2-178-185
