Dynamics of the protest movement in Russia in 2012: cross-regional comparative analysis

Multiple wide-scale political protests of Russian citizens, which took place after the elections to the State Duma on December 4, 2011, and continued after the pres-idential elections during 2012, led to the emergence of the protest movement. It developed its own symbols, such as white color, and the motto “For Fair Elec-tions”. Those riots appeared to be the most massive and large-scale since 1993. Moreover, they took place not only in most Russian regions but even abroad. The paper aims to identify and explain cross-regional differences in the dynamics of protest movement in Russia in 2012. Applying contentious politics theory, the au-thor analyzes the factors that affected the magnitude of mass collective protests. Using the linear regression analysis, the author has created several explanatory models and estimated the influence of socio-economic and political factors on the scale of protests. In addition to that, it has been found that the dynamics of protests was not stable but fluctuated, i.e. was rather “wavy”.
