Russian populism: political reality or future outlook?

Nowadays, Russian and foreign political circles are focusing on a “new wave of populism”, spreading in Western liberal democracies. The term “populism” and its features are not yet conceptualized. The parameters of how to use the European populism theory in relation to the Russian political field have not yet been determined as well. The article attempts to summarize the experience of Russian researchers working on the issue of populism, and to determine the common features and reasons for its appearance. The main aim of the paper is to define the possibilities of using the European experience of exploring populist movements in research on the Russian political area, to define the features of populist trends in the activities of leaders and political forces, and to understand the place of populist technologies in Russian political life.
