The paper examines the discourse of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) political elites in Taiwan during Tsai Ing-wen's two presidential terms (2016-2024) to study how the macropolitical identity model of Taiwan's inhabitants changed under the influence of various factors. Fairclough's critical discourse analysis was the primary method used to review the collected transcripts of speeches by senior DPP leaders. The study revealed that certain fragments of speeches define and influence one or another component of Taiwanese identity, each of which, in turn, shapes the macropolitical identity of the inhabitants of Taiwan as a whole. The results of the work showed that during her first presidential term, Tsai Ing-wen reinforced the national component of the macropolitical identity of the Taiwanese, rejecting the PRC leader's call for reunification under the slogan "one country, two systems". During her second term, misjudging the growing support of voters, she increased the emphasis on ideological differences between China and Taiwan and called for the DPP to change the status quo in relations between them. However, the call to move toward Taiwan independence failed to find support among most residents of the island.References
