Abstract

The thermal diffusivity of a magnetic fluid based on undecane was measured by the regular-mode method. It was possible to obtain a set of parameters sufficient to determine the Rayleigh thermal numbers in convective experiments. It was found that in a magnetic fluid on the basis of undecane in vertical coupled channels, heating from below near the threshold of instability of equilibrium, a periodic change in the direction of convection is observed. This result is an important argument in favor of the fact that the nature of such oscillations is associated with the interaction of magnetic particles with the temperature field and the velocity field for weak thermal convection in the channels. This also indicates that the binary nature of the liquid base of magnetic fluids (kerosene, oil) plays a secondary role in the formation of the oscillatory mode of convection.
