Abstract

The article examines how the system of images is built through the interaction of the visual and verbal in the graphic novel Las calles de arena by the Spanish comic artist P. Roca. The main theme of the work is the search for oneself, acceptance of one’s personality. It is shown that the visual in the narrative creates intertextual connections (biblical references, aesthetics and ideas of Borges), irony, absurdity, contradictory nature of the world, duality motif. It is concluded that only the unity of the visual and verbal can establish the artistic integrity and system of images.
