In the memorial note, the personality and professional path of the prominent representative of the St. Petersburg historical school, Victor Paneyakh, is characterized. His influence on young historians, the principles of his work with historical sources, and his role in forming the Historical Faculty of the European University in St. Petersburg, are evaluated.
