Abstract

A fragment of Lina Kertman’s memoirs concerning her parents – Sara Fradkina and Lev Kertman – is published. Several key episodes from Kertman’s life are in the centre of attention: pre-war childhood and adolescence in Kiev, “walking on production” and experience of a participant in the fighting during the Great Patriotic War, meeting with Evgeny Tarle and the formation of a profes-sional historian. A turning point in the professional and personal biography of the scholar is the persecu-tion of him in the years of “fight against cosmopolitanism” in the post-war USSR and moving to Perm State University at the personal invitation of the rector of Perm State University Alexander Bukirev.
