Abstract

The paper deals with some features of translation of the treatise «The Six bookes of a Commonweale» by Jean Bodin into English in the beginning of the 17th century. The name of Jean Bodin is repeatedly found in the pages of political writings of English intellectuals of the Early Modern time. The analysis of the translation of the treatise is a part of the study on the reception of Bodin's ideas in English political and legal tradition. In any translation, there is an interpreter's personality that emerges through special selected synonyms, verbal constructions and created characteristics. Even more «personality» is present where the translator used different editions of the work, as it happened in this case. The article focuses on the analysis of the use of the term «république» in the works of Early Modern times, and how this lexical construct could create and transform the course of legal discussions. Through such examples, one can observe how the disputes on the prerogatives of the royal power, its limits and mechanisms for its regulation changed the political discourse and shaped the modern political language. This case can help in answering the question of the reasons for the popularity of Jean Bodin in pre-revolutionary England.doi 10.17072/2219-3111-2019-2-132-136
