Abstract

The article presents a general reconstruction of the policy of Prince Dmitriy Tsertelev as the editor of the Russkoe Obozrenie journal in 1890–1892. With the use of archival materials, the circumstances of founding the journal at the end of 1889 are reconstructed. On the basis of the created database, conclusions are drawn about Tsertelev’s attention to the selection of authors and to various topics and headings; their correlation in the journal is demonstrated. The role of Leonid Voronov and Evgeniy Feoktistov in developing the journal is analyzed. Attention is paid to sections of journalism, prose, travel, critics, history, science, and poetry. The circumstances of cooperation of a number of authors with Russkoe Obozrenie, such as Lev Tikhomirov, Vladimir Solovyov, Konstantin Leontyev, Anton Chekhov, and Vladimir Gringmut, are considered specifically. The concept of the “non-partisan” character of Russkoe Obozrenie that is common in historiography is analyzed and a unique place of the journal in a conservative camp is determined. The author analyzes the political position of Tsertelev as the author of “The Contemporary Chronicle” and other articles. The severe criticism of liberalism and democracy, along with the proclamation of a course towards the relative isolation of Russia from Slavic affairs and European politics, were among the most characteristic features of the Russian Review in 1890–1892. The author analyzes the problems connected with the conflict between the sponsor of the journal David Morozov, its publisher Nikolay Boborykin and its editor-in-chief Dmitriy Tsertelev. The reasons that led to Tsertelev’s resignation and the acute crisis in Russkoe Obozrenie in 1892 are demonstrated.
