Abstract

The article analyzes passages from Clement of Alexandria’s Stromatus, in which he writes about the teaching function of the “Gnostics” (prototypes of the elders). The Gnostic is called, having improved himself, to teach others, but should not do this indiscriminately: he helps those who want it, has the right to punish, and does not chase the number of students. The Gnostic shapes the student, calls to action by personal example, and gives instructions. He knows the time, the method and the audience. The prototype of the Gnostics were the Levites, who, according to the prophet Ezekiel, were supposed to teach the people to distinguish between clean and unclean.
