Abstract

The bronze sculpture of Faun, found in Italy near the city of Locri in the novel "South Wind" by N. Douglas, is created through the description of it and the material from which it is made of, its location and the description of the archaeological finds that preceded it. The perception of it by several heroes experiencing significant internal changes is shown. The sculpture of Faun becomes an impetus for discussions of the characters on the problems of concept and interpretation of art and culture, discussion of the issue of the examination of works of art, as well as the dialogue of European and American civilizations. The novels of N. Hawthorne and G. James form the tradition of the reception of the image of Faun. Keywords: sculpture, Faun, Douglas, "South Wind", culture.
