Abstract

The name of Fyodor Semenovich Gorovoy (1916-1973) and his academic achievements are well-known in Russian historiography. Nevertheless, some aspects of his academic biography still attract attention from the historiographers of science and research. One of the lesser-known parts of F.S. Gorovoy’s biography is his work on his candidate degree dissertation. The interest in this topic can be attributed to the fact that this paper became one of the first large research works in the post-war soviet historiography that paved the way for the studying of the history of the mining and metallurgy workers in the Urals as a special social group of former serfs in the context of their connection with the production and industrial factories in the Urals, as well as the agricultural activities supporting their everyday life. F.S. Gorovoy can be seen as one of the pioneers in the study of mining and metallurgy worker population group formation. This is an original stratum of workers in the Urals that came from the peasantry and became the social base for the formation of the Ural workers stratum that worked at industrial factories in the Urals before the Revolution. The article is part of the grant project "Historians of the military generation and their dissertations (1941-1945): a collective biography, motivation for scientific creativity and features of the dissertation narrative".
