Abstract

Based on the synthesis of methodological approaches of classical conflict sociology and collective memory studies, the article attempts to propose a conceptual framework for the study of memorial conflicts as phenomena arising in specific socio-historical conditions, inextricably linked to memory politics and commemoration, but also included in broader ideological, political, economic, creative, socio-psychological contexts. The author understands memorial conflicts as a type of social conflict that involves a conscious clash of opposing interests, goals, positions, and views of the parties involved in the conflict, related to the interpretation of past events, as well as the structure, form, and content of commemorative practices. The author believes that this term is more productive than the widely used concept of «memory wars». The retrospective analysis uses specific examples of memorial conflicts in the Soviet Union from 1953 to 1991, reconstructed based on archival (State Archives of the Russian Federation, Russian State Archives of Modern History, Russian State Archives of Literature and Art) and published documents, press materials, and ego-sources. Various approaches to their typology are presented, including the author's typology based on the factors of their occurrence, which allows for the identification of value-based, worldview-based, institutional, narrative, procedural, and aesthetic memorial conflicts, as well as «conflicts of historical authenticity» and «conflicts of belonging». According to the author, the memorial order, which was supported by the state and party authorities in the USSR until 1988–1989, was a unique but effective way of managing conflicts in public perceptions of the past. However, as the order began to deconstruct, the number of memorial conflicts increased, and their antagonism intensified.
