Abstract

The article discusses the formation of local narratives in the context of tourism, their role in the perception of the image of a particular region. Particular attention is paid to the study of travel literature and specialized tourist publications (guidebooks, thematic magazines) of the late 19th – mid-20th centuries about the Urals. The study of these sources demonstrates that the history of industrial tourism in its modern sense in the Urals goes back more than a hundred years, but the narratives at different stages differ. It can be concluded that the promotion of industrial tourism in the Ural cities reached its peak in the first third of the 20th century, and, starting from the 1960s, it faded away, giving way to other types of tourism in specialized publications. Excursions to existing production facilities are losing interest among the audience; the emphasis in the tourist narrative is shifting to industrial heritage and historical monument factories. Currently, it can be said about a kind of synthesis of these approaches and the formation of a new tourist narrative, in which the Ural production itself can be considered as an attraction, without reference to specific eras, since it is described in a similar way in pre-revolutionary and Soviet publications – both present the Ural industry as modern and advanced. This characteristic also applies to currently operating enterprises. Thus, one can observe a certain continuity in the narratives about industrial tourism in the Urals, which today make possible for actualizing industrial themes to successfully promote the history of the Urals and attract tourists from other regions, as well as for creative rethinking of the industrial heritage.
