RAFTER’S DICTIONARY

Abstract

The Perm Territory is known as a region with an extensive hydrographic system. The rivers flowing from the western slope of the Ural mountains are unusually picturesque. Such rivers as Vishera, Yayva, Vilva, Usva, Koiva, Chusovaya, Sylva, etc., are popular among tourists. Water tourism on catamarans is a traditional form of student practice. We can say that in the Perm Territory has formed a special subculture of students-rafters whith specific traditions, including their own vocabulary. The author of the article, a rafter with 20 years experience, summarizes his observations of the rafters’ speech culture and captures their slang. The dictionary includes generally accepted in water tourism concepts and occasionalisms, including ironic ones. Some situations in which a rafting dictionary is needed are found in the novel by A.V. Ivanov “The geographer drank the globe”.
