Abstract

The polar territories of Russia are the most northern territories located inside the Arctic Circle. They are often characterized by remoteness and inaccessibility. With the growing interest, the issues of tourism development and related infrastructure are no less urgent. The polar territories have unique natural and climatic characteristics for the development of extreme tourism. The territories of theKola Peninsula and the Zapolyarnii Urals were selected as key territories for determining and comparing the possibilities for the development of extreme tourism. The purpose of this work is to determine the natural and climatic features of the polar territories of Russia for the development of extreme tourism using the example of the Zapolyarnii Urals and the Kola Peninsula. To compare the territories, the following criteria were chosen: temperature regime throughout the year, light regime, features of the circulation of air masses, features of the relief, the development of the river network, and the development of infrastructure. The studied territories of the Zapolyarnii Urals and the Kola Peninsula are similar to each other. They are characterized by a rugged relief, the presence of developed river valleys and lakes of predominantly glacial origin. The main problems of the studied polar territories are the harsh natural and climatic conditions, remoteness from the main settlement zones, insufficient innovation activity, high cost of services and low level of tourist service.
