Abstract

The article studies the intermedial connections of the novel “North and South” by Elizabeth Gaskell and its film version. This work remains one of the most significant literary creations of the XIXth century, that appeals to social issues, class differences and the impact of industrialization on the life of the Victorian society. With the help of the intermedial analysis, we can see and trace how two different types of art are incorporated into each other, transforming and interacting, focusing on the meanings inherent in literary reading and newly found out. An intermedial analysis helps to look at a literary work from a different angle and to enter deeper into the ideological and artistic integrity of a new work of art - a film version of a literary work.
