COGNOMINA ДВУХ ПЛИНИЕВ: ГАЯ ПЛИНИЯ СЕКУНДА И ГАЯ ПЛИНИЯ ЦЕЦИЛИЯ СЕКУНДА

Аннотация

Приводятся сведения о подлинном именовании двух римских писателей и государственных деятелей: Гая Плиния Секунда и Гая Плиния Цецилия Секунда. По поводу имен обоих Плиниев современные исследователи допускают много ошибок. Изучение истории этих имен позволяет судить о правоотношениях в Древнем Риме (семейное право, порядок усыновления, право римских граждан на три имени – ius trium nominum) и о народной смеховой культуре (снайперски данные согражданам cognomina). И средневековая, и современная традиция родового или семейного именования уходят корнями в римское право. Римское имя содержало указание на социальный статус, древность рода или личные привилегии. При именовании учитывались также географическая область проживания, семейные отношения, выдающиеся качества носителя имени. Высшие классы с целью подчеркнуть свою значимость отстаивали право на три и более имен вплоть до середины IV в.  Показательна смена имен обоих Плиниев: не будучи усыновленным Помпонием, Гай Плиний Целер отказался от родового cognomen и принял Secundus, а его племянник и после усыновления сохранил фамильное прозвище отеческого рода Caecilius. И. Каянто, как и следовало ожидать от классификатора-первопроходца, исходя из формальных признаков, относит cognomina Felix и Faustus к разряду пожелания или похвалы, а Secundus – к порядку рождения. Избранный нами метод социально-культурного контекста позволяет раскрыть cognomen Secundus как «счастливый».
