Abstract

The article discusses factors that contribute to the tendency of island territories in the contemporary world to become autonomies, as well as principles and criteria for classification of such territories. It is stated that the majority of them are, one way or another, connected with the imperial legacy. Thus, while classifying the territories, the following factors were taken into account: differences between empires (continental and colonial), imperial holdings (migratory and "ethnic"); whether a territory changed or retained its status against the background of the imperial system collapseDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17072/2218-1067-2015-4-95-109
