Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools in Research and Manuscript Preparation

1. General Provisions

This policy has been developed in accordance with the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and leading publishers. The policy is aimed at ensuring transparency in the use of AI, protecting academic integrity, and maintaining the responsibility of authors for the content of their work.

The policy applies to all authors submitting manuscripts to the journal.

2. Basic Principles

2.1. AI tools are not recognized as authors of a publication.

2.2. Responsibility of the authors. The author(s) bear full responsibility for all materials submitted to the journal's editorial office. Authors are obliged to independently verify and critically analyse all materials prepared with the use of AI tools – to ensure their reliability, correctness, originality, and compliance with scientific standards. AI tools may be used to support the work of authors, but not to replace their critical thinking, expertise, and scientific judgment.

2.3. Transparency of use. Any use of AI tools in the conduct of research or in the preparation of a manuscript must be explicitly disclosed by the authors. Concealment of the use of AI is considered a violation of academic integrity.

3. Requirements for Disclosure of AI Use

3.1. Use of AI for substantive tasks. In the case of using AI tools for data collection, processing, analysis, literature search, preparation of illustrations, or other tasks related to the content of the research, such use must be reflected in the text of the manuscript in the section devoted to the research methodology. When using AI for substantive tasks, the text of the query (prompt) must also be included in the manuscript.

3.2. Use of AI for technical tasks. In the case of using AI tools for editing, proofreading, translation of the text, formatting of references, or for solving other tasks of a purely technical nature, such use must be indicated in the notes to the editor when submitting the manuscript for review through the electronic submission system on the website.

3.3. Information on the use of AI. Disclosure of information on the use of AI tools includes:

  • a list of specific language models or other AI tools, indicating their versions;

  • the dates on which the authors used them;

  • a description of the purposes and manner of use.

3.4. Form of disclosure. It is recommended to include the following statement: "In preparing this work, the author(s) used [NAME OF TOOL] for [PURPOSE]. After using this tool, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take full responsibility for the content of the publication."

4. Prohibited Use of AI

4.1. The use of AI tools to generate key academic content, including the main conclusions of the study and interpretation of results, is prohibited.

4.2. The use of AI tools to create or modify images, graphs, and illustrations in submitted manuscripts is prohibited, except in cases where such use is part of the research methodology and is described in detail in the relevant section.

4.3. The use of AI tools to generate fictitious references or unreliable bibliographic data is prohibited.

5. Verification and Sanctions

5.1. The editorial board of the journal "Perm University Herald. Political Science" reserves the right to check texts for signs of AI generation using specialised verification tools.

5.2. If concealed use of AI, unreliable data, or errors resulting from the use of AI tools are identified, the manuscript will be rejected.

5.3. The editorial board reserves the right to request additional information from authors regarding the use of AI tools in the process of preparing the manuscript.
