Ethics of Hospitality and Secular Society Parties in the Context of Victorian Culture

Abstract

  The paper deals with some issues of etiquette typical for English secular society in the second half – last third of the XIX century, as well as norms of behavior being accepted in the Victorain era. The paper also traces the etymology of term etiquette and ethics, comparing these two concepts. Special attention is paid to such forms of famous English hospitality as social receptions, dinner parties, and visits. Using some writings by Anthony Trollope as an example, the paper analyses the relationship between English and European cultures and the influence of the Victorian era on world culture in general.
