The Semantics of Proper Names in George Eliot’s Novel “Adam Bede”

Abstract

The article dwells on a number of references to the Bible. Other basic ideas in the novel are also presented as regards Eliot's upbringing. This article attempts to systematize data on psychological manifestation in G. Eliot's novel Adam Bede (Adam, Seth, Dina, Hetty, Arthur), on the basis of which an analysis of the meanings of their names is carried out.
