Abstract

The article examines the complex of thanatological motives and images and their transmission through olfactory perception in the work of E.M. Remarque Three Comrades in the first chapters in three languages (German, English and Russian). The study also pays special attention to the work of other scientists studying Remarque. The author comes to the conclusion that E.M. Remarque uses olfactory vocabulary not only as a background or a means of characterization, but builds a complex thanatological metaphor with it to more accurately convey the emotions of the characters.
