Mass-media and Terror in Don Delillo's novel Mao II

Abstract

The article analyzes Don DeLillo's novel Mao II, its thematic features, thus research focuses on writer’s solution of personality problem in terms of terror and its increasing role in life of society and individuals. The article explores the key points of the novel, such as globalization, totalitarianism, and design of a new era where information about terror becomes not only frightening, but boosting raitings. It also examines the central conflict in the novel, which revolves around the individual's struggle against the choices imposed by mainstream culture. Special attention is given to the impact of extremist ideologies, the role of mass and to the issue of freedom and public safety.
