Abstract

V.G. Korolenko is one of Russian writers in demand by the Chinese public. His stories and novels were actively translated into Chinese, receiving high marks from famous writers and critics of China. However, the story “The River Plays,” which was of great importance in the history of Russian literature, was translated into Chinese relatively late and still has not been specifically considered by Chinese critics and philologists. The proposed interpretation of the story and the historical and functional analysis (research in history of text reception) lead us to conclusion: the Chinese reception of the story was determined by certain features of the work and on the contrary by the specifics of the national cultural movement in China in the first half of the 20th century.
