The paper considers the problem of representation of fundamental texts properties in a literary text and in its translation. The issue under consideration lies in the range of questions, which are actively studied in contemporary cognitive linguistics, stylistics, text theory and translation studies. Our research was based on a short story by a contemporary British author Graham Swift “Wonders Will Never Cease” and its Russian translation. As far as the prose by G. Swift is not fully represented in Russian translation, we suggest our own translation of the short story. A variety of fundamental and contemporary scientific works considering the issues of text properties, text production and perception, translation typology serve as a theoretical foundation for the research. A complex of scientific methods both general (analysis, synthesis, description, classification, generalization) and special (contextual analysis, stylistic analysis, analysis of sentence organisation) were applied in the course of the research. The results of the research demonstrate that text cohesion is presented in the source text by a complex of various lingual means (phonetic, lexical and syntactical) as well as different types of cohesion, which functions are 1) to provide formal and conceptual unity of the source text; 2) realize the dominant text feature – poetisity; 3) express the author’s individual style. The analysis of the target text shows that the mentioned above means and types of cohesion as well as their functions are preserved in the target text. In general, cohesion, coherence and poetisity of the source text are translated in the target text.Downloads
