STRATEGIES AND TACTICS OF MANIPULATIVENESS IN POLITICAL ARTICLES OF MASS MEDIA

Abstract

The article deals with the peculiarities of techniques, strategies and tactics of manipulativeness used by the authors of political articles in modern mass media. Manipulation of the recipients' consciousness allows creating a text filled with evaluative statements that have no factual evidence, except for the author's opinion. Manipulativeness in political discourse is an integral part of it and is expressed by certain verbal means. The most common means of expressing manipulativeness are the implementation of mobilization strategy, tactics of shocking with facts and tactics of quoting the object of discrediting. The paper provides a detailed analysis of one newspaper political article from The New Yorker magazine, which specializes in political news, mass culture, humor, and also publishes various videos and podcasts on various topics, but the main focus of the magazine is on politics and socio-cultural phenomena. The author of the analyzed article is Susan B. Glasser. In the article about Donald Trump and the US presidential election, the journalist unambiguously and subjectively speaks about the presidential candidate and the political situation in general. Analyzing the tactics and strategies of manipulation in the article allows us to see how the author manipulates the readers' consciousness.
