TRANSFORMATIONAL POTENTIAL OF TAXIS DEVERBATIVES (BASED ON GERMAN STATEMENTS WITH PREPOSITIONAL CONSTRUCTIONS)

Abstract

This article is devoted to the consideration of the taxis potential of German deverbative nouns used with various prepositions of temporal and non-temporal (modal, instrumental, medial, conditional, causal, etc.) semantics. The taxis semantics of German deverbatives is actualized when they are combined with prepositions and «explicated» in reverbalizing prepositional-nominal constructions. Actional, procedural and static deverbatives are transformed into verbal predications with their transition into a generating verb of identical semantics. Taxis deverbatives are reverbalizing names with absolute transformational potential, and prepositional constructions with it are transformed by deverbatives into various subordinate clauses (temporal, conditional, concessive, causal, modal, instrumental, medial). When combined with the temporal prepositions während, nach, seit, vor, bis, they can be verbalized into subordinate tenses with conjunctions während / solange, als, wenn, nachdem, seit / seitdem, bevor / ehe, bis, and when used with others non-temporal prepositions – into modal and instrumental / medial clauses with the conjunctions wobei and indem / dadurch (...), daß, conditional clauses with the conjunction wenn, as well as causal clauses with the conjunctions weil, da and concessive clauses with the conjunctions obwohl, obgleich, obschon, obwenn. The limitations of the transformational possibilities of prepositional-deverbative constructions may be related to the derivational semantics of some procedural deverbatives. As a result of the study, it was found that the transformational possibilities of German deverbatives as part of prepositional constructions confirm the actualization of various primary-taxis and second-taxis categorical meanings in utterances with them.
