Abstract

This article is devoted to a comprehensive study of the image of the crane in the system of the Russian language and culture, with an emphasis on its ambiguity and cultural symbolic significance. The study analyzes the lexical and phraseological units associated with the crane, as well as identifies key aspects of its perception in folk beliefs, proverbs and folk signs. In the Russian cultural tradition, the crane acts as a symbol of divine powers, a messenger of higher powers, as well as a harbinger of prosperous events and general prosperity. In folk mythology and folklore, the bird is often associated with a spiritual connection between the worlds – it carries away the souls of the dead and accompanies the souls of newborns, which emphasizes its sacred significance. The image of the crane is repeatedly used in phraseological phrases and proverbs reflecting its twofold symbolic nature: on the one hand, it embodies sublimity, inspiration, dreams and aspirations for the unattainable, and on the other hand, it symbolizes the violation of boundaries, often associated with brusqueness and unlimited freedom of action. The analysis of the frequency indicators of the functioning of these expressions revealed their dynamic development and variability during the history of the Russian language, which allows us to trace the evolution of cultural ideas about the crane and its role in the national perception of the world. Thus, the image of the crane is a multifaceted symbol that combines the ideas of spirituality, freedom, unattainability and boundaries. It reflects the values and worldview of the Russian people, acting as a bridge between the material and spiritual worlds, as well as remaining an important part of the heritage of national culture. The research allows for a broader understanding of the cultural codes and symbolic images underlying folk beliefs and artistic concepts.
