Abstract

This paper compares philosophical-analytical and speech-study approaches to the description. The definition of description as an illocutionary act is shown to correspond to the study of a similar functional-semantic type of speech that represents a logical-grammatical form of a static description of an object. At the same time, the inclusion of a considered speech act into a typical activity situation and the identification of its relevant features (conditions to realize a goal) allows to analyze various descriptions as society-accepted speech practices from functional-communicative perspectives.
