The Image of Odysseus in the Works of Clement of Alexandria

Clement of Alexandria repeatedly refers to images from ancient mythology in his works. One of its heroes who attracted the attention of this Christian author was Odysseus. In three parables-sketches of the Alexandrian theologian, designed to illustrate one or another position in Christian teaching, the king of Ithaca appears before us as a positive character, his prudence and moderation are noted. There are, however, examples in which his actions are viewed in a negative light. The situational use of ancient images is a characteristic feature of Clement of Alexandria.

The World of Childhood in the Novels by Charles Dickens: a Boy Reading a Book

The article examines the image of the child reading a book (mainly fiction) in David Copperfield and The Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. The book is analysed as a paradoxical symbol of an unhappy childhood, a symbol of loneliness. At the same time, especially in the novel David Copperfield, literature appears as a source of inspiration, moral support for the main character, as well as a reference to the future career of David Copperfield as a writer.

POETICS OF CHRONOTOPE IN THE LYRICS OF ROCK WORKS BY V. R. TSOI

The article examines the poetics of chronotope in Russian rock poetry based on the works of V.R. Tsoi in order to identify the regular features of the rock poet's work, as well as to consider his work in the context of rock poetry in general. Chronotopic images become the key to understanding the general tonality of the worldview of the lyrical rock hero, expand the thematics through the subtext expressed by explicit and implicit forms of embodiment of chronotopic dominants in the text of a rock work.

Biblical Themes and Allusions through the Prism of the Concepts Faith vs. Disbelief (based on the Novel The Black Obelisk by Erich Maria Remarque)

The presented article examines the concepts of "Faith (Glaube)" and "Disbelief (Unglaube)" and highlights their most frequent meanings (based on the material of E. M. Remarque's novel The Black Obelisk). Through the analysis of critical works on Remarque's books, it is proved that the novel has not been practically studied (both in domestic and foreign literary studies). At the first stage, dictionary and etymological analysis of the constituent concepts of "Faith (Glaube)" and "Disbelief (Unglaube)" is carried out, also their ethnospecific content is interpreted through German idiomatics. At the second stage, the text of the novel is examined for the presence of biblical images, themes and allusions. The analysis allows us to conclude about the importance of concepts for the artistic perception and interpretation of the novel.

The spiritual crisis of the subjective "I" in the lyrics of S. M. Gandlevsky (on the example of the poem "When the yellowing beer is worried...", 1979)

The article examines the key aspects of S.M. Gandlevsky's lyric character in a transitional state, using the example of his poem "When the yellowing beer is worrying..." from 1979. The research focuses on an under-researched aspect of S. M Gandlevsky’s poetics, namely subjectivity. During times of spiritual crisis, the invariant characteristics of the 'I' become more clearly revealed, allowing us to identify features of his poetic style for future study. This issue is significant because underground poetry has only recently been studied by philologists and there is a lack of research on this "second culture". The authors conclude that even during times of turmoil, there are invariant characteristics to the lyric subject.

Literary Precedent in the Artistic Whole of Graham Swift’s Novella Mothering Sunday

The article analyzes Graham Swift's novella from the point of view of the story's plot and narrative dialogue with the works of R. L. Stevenson and J. Conrad, the texts serving as precedents for this work by a modern British author about the formation of a writer, the formation of his aesthetic credo, and by and large – about the dialectic of life and its literary and figurative interpretation; about the relationship between truth and fiction; about the ambiguity of a word in a literary work. It shows how fruitful the dialogue between the text of a literary work and its "precedents" is in general, and what an important role precedent texts play in shaping the artistic whole of the analyzed story in particular.

M. Puig’s Pubis Angelical: from the Novel to the Film Adaptation

The article compares the novel by the Argentine writer M. Puig Pubis angelical and its film adaptation directed by Raul De La Torre. The purpose of the study is to analyze the recreation of the system of images and the conflict of the novel in the film adaptation. It is concluded that the film largely conveys the atmosphere of the original text, the plot and the structure. Nevertheless, the film adaptation cannot be considered successful, since it violates the deep connections and the system of images embedded in the novel, which led to a distortion of the author's intent. In addition, the film is difficult for the mass audience, which led to its failure.

LANDSCAPE AND MYTH, LIFE AND DEATH: THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CREATIVE VIEWS OF M. GORKY AND I. A. BUNIN

The article examines the difference in creative views of two representatives of Russian literature at the turn of the XIX and XX centuries − Maxim Gorky and Ivan Bunin, using the example of an analysis of landscape descriptions and mythopoetics, an approach to considering the concepts of «life» and «death» in the stories «Chapel» and «Old Woman Izergil». The analysis identifies the key differences between Bunin and Gorky's depiction and representation of life and death, characterizes landscape descriptions, and identifies similarities and differences in the mythological layer of creativity. It is concluded that the landscape in both works is able to motivate a change of plot, contains a mythopoetic component that reveals the phenomenon of life and death in different ways.

The Reflections of Russian Culture in The Cantos by Ezra Pound

The article is devoted to the consideration of references to Russian culture in the text of the poem by the American author E. Pound The Cantos. The references in Canto LXXIX to the surname of the artist of the "Russian Ballet" S. Diaghilev – Serafima Astafieva are studied in detail. A veiled reference to the image of this ballerina in Canto LXXVII is also considered, in which Astafieva appears as a certain Grishkin– the heroine of T. S. Eliot's poem Whispers of Immortality. As a necessary comment, the article presents E. Pound's general understanding of the world historical process as an arena of struggle between the capitalist usurious civilization and the mythologized epochs of Antiquity, the Middle Ages, Ancient China, etc. rooted in tradition. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the relationship between the art of the Russian artist and the Byzantine art of the era of Emperor Justinian. In conclusion, the author concludes about the importance of Russian ballet art in Pound's historiosophical concept.

Peculiarities of the Thanatopoetics of the Ballads by A.K.Tolstoy Kurgan and I.-H. Tsedlitz Ghost Ship

The presented work examines the literary relations of A. K. Tolstoy with the German romantics (in particular with I.-H. Zedlitz) on the example of the ballads Kurgan and Ghost Ship. The hypothesis of typological similarities between the works of the authors is put forward and proved on the basis of the allocation of thanatological images and motifs that were comprehended and interpreted by A. K. Tolstoy both with reference to traditional Russian folklore taking into account the influence of Western European Romanticism.
